Elisha Yong Journal — Site Policies

Privacy Policy

This page explains how Elisha Yong Journal handles personal information from readers, newsletter subscribers, and anyone who writes to the newsroom through our contact page, email, or phone line. It is written plainly and it is not marketing copy — if you disagree with anything here, you are welcome to ask us about it before you send us personal information.

Summary of this policy

  • We collect only what your interaction with the site requires: a newsletter email, or whatever you choose to include in a message to us.
  • We do not sell, rent, or trade reader lists or reader messages to any third party.
  • You can ask to see, correct, or delete the information we hold about you at any time.
  • Questions go straight to the newsroom desk at TheodoreMeyer@elishayong.com — a person reads them.

Effective date: October 8, 2026

What we collect, and when

There are only a few moments where the site asks you for anything about yourself. Everything here sits in one of those moments, and nothing is collected quietly in the background.

Newsletter sign-up

Email address only

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store the email address you enter and the date you subscribed. That is the whole record. We use it to send the newsletter and, occasionally, a note about a change to your subscription. We do not add you to any other list or combine your address with other data.

Messages you send the newsroom

Whatever you write

When you use our contact page, write to TheodoreMeyer@elishayong.com, or call +18332923148, we keep the name and contact details you give us, along with the substance of your message. Editorial tips are held the same way: we keep them for as long as they are useful to the reporting, and we do not publish a tipster's details without asking first.

Simple visiting records

Server logs, no profiles

Like most news sites, our servers record basic technical information when a page is opened: the requested address, the time of the request, the referring page, and a coarse browser or device description. These logs help us spot broken pages and keep the site available. They are not used to build a profile of you, and we do not match them to your email address.

What we do not collect

No account, no payment data

Reading the journal does not require an account, and we do not ask for a card number anywhere on this site. We do not collect government identifiers, precise location, health information, or any other special category of personal information, and we ask that you do not include that kind of detail when you write to us.

How we use it

Every use below has a reason attached to it. If we ever want to use your information for something that is not on this list, we come back and ask you first, in plain words, and you can say no without losing access to anything on the site.

Our position on reader data

The journal is independent and stays independent by keeping its obligations small. That includes the obligation to protect the people who read it. A reader list is not an asset we trade; it is a shelf of names we keep for one purpose and nothing else.

  • Sending the newsletter

Your email address is used to deliver the issues you asked for and to handle subscription changes such as pausing or unsubscribing. Delivery is handled by a mailing service acting on our instructions.

  • Answering you

When you contact the newsroom, your details are used to reply to you, to follow up on a correction or a tip, and to keep a record of the conversation so a colleague can pick it up if needed.

  • Keeping the site standing

Technical logs are read in aggregate to find broken pages, blocked requests, and load problems. We look at patterns, not individuals, and we do not use them to target advertising.

  • Meeting legal duties

We may keep or disclose information where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to respond to a lawful request. If a request concerns something you sent us, we tell you when we are allowed to.

We do not sell personal information, we do not rent reader lists, and we do not share your details with advertisers. Where a mailing service processes newsletter addresses on our behalf, it does so only on our instructions and only for delivery.

How long we keep it

Newsletter address

Kept while your subscription is active. If you unsubscribe, we remove the address from the sending list; a short suppression record may remain so that no further mail is sent to it by mistake.

Newsroom correspondence

Kept for up to twenty-four months after the last exchange, then reviewed and deleted unless the message relates to a published story, a correction, or an open legal matter.

Technical logs

Rotated on a short cycle, typically a few weeks, and then discarded. Aggregate counts may be kept longer, but they no longer identify a single visit.

Retention is not indefinite by default. When a period above runs out, the record is deleted or anonymised rather than stored on the chance that it becomes useful later.

Your choices and rights

You do not need to give a reason to exercise any of the choices below. Write to TheodoreMeyer@elishayong.com from the address you used, or call us on +18332923148 during working hours, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We answer within a few working days, and we will tell you if we need anything from you to confirm the request is really yours.

  • Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and tell us if something in it is wrong.
  • Ask us to delete a newsletter address, a message thread, or a tip you would rather we no longer keep.
  • Unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in any issue, or by writing to us directly.
  • Ask why a particular piece of information is kept, and receive the same answer we give each other internally.

Questions readers ask

Do you use cookies or tracking tools on the site?

Basic cookies are used to keep the site working, and any optional ones are covered separately on our Cookie Policy page, where you can also see the choices available to you. We do not run a reader profile across other websites.

Can I send a tip without giving my name?

You can write to the newsroom without an account or a full name, and we will work with what you give us. Be aware that if we cannot verify a tip we may not be able to publish it, and that a reply is only possible if you leave an address we can write back to.

Who sees the information I send you?

People working on the journal — editorial staff and the small team that runs the site. Where a mailing service or a hosting provider processes something for us, it acts on our instructions. No reader message is passed to an advertiser.

What happens if this policy changes?

We update the date at the top of this page whenever the wording changes, and if a change affects subscribers in a meaningful way we say so in the newsletter before it takes effect. Reading the journal does not require you to accept a new version silently.

My question is not answered here. Where do I go?

Ask us before you send anything

If you are unsure whether something counts as personal information, or you want a record removed before you write, tell us first. A short question costs you nothing and often saves a longer exchange later.
